Self-Made Coffins

April 8, 2011

I am really amazed how many people in our world feel like their stuck right now. When things get bad in our lives we all have a tendency to circle the wagons and fall further into isolation.  Our culture has created an unhealthy reliance on our government, money, the American dream and anything else we can blame our current circumstances on. We have lost the ability to dream and desire for ourselves. We have lost the ability to plan; to make a conscious decision to change. Fear dictates our lives. What will people think if I do that?

But what about the economy, oil prices, food prices, the war, the tsunami etc…..

What are we so afraid of? I love the story in which Jesus approaches the man at the pool of Bethesda. The story describes him as being lame for 38 years. He goes to the pool everyday hoping that God will heal him, but it never happens. Why? This man is stuck, and Jesus recognizes it. He asks him a simple but pointed question, “Do you want to get well?”

How arrogant! Do I want to get well? I want to walk!

You see Jesus understand that many times we have given up on what we really desire. I know many of us can relate to the man at the well; maybe we want to get better, but maybe we enjoy others taking care of us. We don’t like being a burden, but it is all we know. It is safe in our self-made coffin. But what are we protecting? Nothing! An empty life! Taking chances is hard, and blaming others for our lives is easy.

When you feel stuck, look deeper into your heart for what you really want in your life. Make hard choices to change. God may be asking you the question “Is this what you want?” Look deeper, take chances and step out of your comfort zone with God!

Mike, this is such a timely message for where I am right now: starting to make some hard choices, and acually enjoying it! Freedom is waiting for us when we simplify (unclutter) & focus. Can’t wait to see where God leads next!

Thanks my friend…a very timely word for me as well. There is one thing for the past 6 years that has been a never ending cycle that I just cannot find satisfying answers to. Then today, it seems that one of the worst things that could begin to unfold just did and the beginnings of it getting worse deepened on me. I just walked in from work, changed my clothes, sat down and read this. Thanks Mike for the strong word…it helps!!! Greg
